Comment Spam
Unwanted comments added to a blog. Why do people comment spam? Comment spam is usually for one of two reasons:
- to disrupt or vandalize your site (less common)
- to add links via the comment to another site. The target site is usually commercial, often selling drugs, porn etc. This is because of the way Google ranks sites via how many links to your site, your site has. Spammers want to improve their Google rank at your expense so that they are higher in the results for particular search terms.
Comment Spam is usually added by a mechanical process (i.e. comments created by a piece of software) rather than by a real person. There are various countermeasures photobloggers can take to avoid comment spam although it is tough to eliminate altogether. Please refer to your blog CMS manual for comment spam resources that might work for you.

Comment Whore
Someone who leaves comments on another blog just to get redirects, traffic and comments back on their own site. Comment whoring relies on the fact that photobloggers are, by their nature, friendly and polite and often reply personally and individually to all their comments.
There's a fine line between networking and comment whoring that every blogger must determine for themselves. Photoblog comment whores can often be recognized by their short and useless comments such as:
- Nice shot/capture/image
- Love your site
Comment whores often comment on the top 100 sites from photobloggers as a way to 'establish' themselves. They would spend their time better concentrating less on comments and more on their photography as a way to generate real hits.
